Bridging the Gap Between Practice and Assessment

Professor Carroll wanted to ensure that students had a chance to engage with course material before being formally assessed. OpenClass provided the perfect low-pressure environment for students to build confidence.

“I found students did better on the quizzes when they had a chance to try the material before they had to go show that they understood it,” she explains. “Teaching remotely, it was important to find a way for them to practice before they were assessed.”

By integrating OpenClass into her courses, she gave students optional review assignments, which became wildly popular.

“Almost every single student did it every single week,” she notes. “And if I hadn’t prepared one for a week, there would be messages popping up after lecture: ‘Is there an OpenClass this week? When is it going to be available?’
